Key contributions to complex cases, practice, and professional standards

Leading the Rehabilitation and Care Pathway in Guernsey’s Largest Ever Personal Injury Award

Verity Boak acted as specialist rehabilitation case manager supporting a young man sustaining a complete spinal cord injury and tetraplegia caused by a road traffic incident.

The case, ultimately settled for £23 million, represents the highest personal injury damages award recorded by the Royal Court of Guernsey.

Alongside the claimant’s legal team at Stewarts, Verity led the planning, coordination and delivery of the claimant’s entire rehabilitation and care pathway from an early stage, working closely with the family, clinicians and therapists to stabilise, rehabilitate and future-proof the client’s life.

From the outset, Verity organised and oversaw all key aspects of the claimant’s post-injury needs, including:

  • the establishment of a comprehensive care package,

  • specialist equipment procurement,

  • housing identification, adaptation and suitability planning,

  • coordination of complex therapy input across disciplines,

  • and strategic rehabilitation planning aligned to the claimant’s long-term goals and quality of life.

A critical milestone in the case was the claimant’s private admission to a specialist spinal injuries rehabilitation hospital, arranged with Verity’s support, where he underwent intensive assessment and rehabilitation, including hydrotherapy. This intervention played a pivotal role in shaping both his recovery trajectory and the evidential basis for his long-term needs.

Significant interim funding secured during the litigation enabled the purchase and adaptation of a new, fully accessible home in Guernsey, alongside bespoke rehabilitation equipment, specialist therapy input and long-term care provision.

Verity worked closely with a strong, collaborative multidisciplinary team to ensure that funding decisions translated into practical, meaningful outcomes rather than abstract recommendations.

This case required exceptional coordination across care, therapy, equipment, housing and medico-legal evidence, within the constraints of a small-island jurisdiction with limited specialist resources. It also demanded sensitivity, leadership and trust-building with the claimant and his family at a time of profound upheaval.
