Double amputee returns to Jersey following life-changing road traffic collision

Verity Boak was instructed to take a lead role in the rehabilitation of Joe Claridge following a catastrophic road traffic collision in Belgium, which resulted in bilateral above-knee amputations and severe abdominal complications.

From an early stage, Verity Boak was responsible for planning and coordinating Joe’s repatriation to Jersey, working alongside Stewarts’ International Injury team to ensure a safe and timely return once he was medically stable. On arrival, Verity arranged and continues to oversee a comprehensive, therapy-led rehabilitation programme, coordinating specialist physiotherapy and occupational therapy delivered by CNS Neuro Rehab, alongside prosthetic input, dietetic support, and wider multidisciplinary input tailored to Joe’s individual needs.

As part of this process, Verity identified and secured suitable single-storey accommodation in Jersey, with adaptations to promote safety, independence and long-term functionality. She continues to coordinate ongoing therapy provision, prosthetic input, nutritional support and environmental considerations to ensure Joe’s rehabilitation remains responsive as his abilities, goals and circumstances evolve.

A central focus of Verity’s role has been supporting Joe’s return to work and re-engagement with the hobbies and lifestyle he values most, including cooking and outdoor pursuits such as fishing and kayaking. This reflects a holistic, outcomes-focused approach – supporting Joe not only to recover function but also to return, as far as possible, to the life he would have been living had the injury not occurred.
